Highlights!

New! IN THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE AND "CHICAGO TONIGHT" ON WINNETKA!
Read about the grassroots, broad-based movement for affordable housing in Winnetka! Here's the March 31, 2011 Chicago Tribune on-line version and the print version (which has additional photos and graphics). The WTTW segment below is from April 6, 2011:

New! WINNETKANS: Support Affordable Housing, Be Informed
** In December 2010, the Winnetka Plan Commission advanced to the Village Council a set of recommendations for implementing Winnetka's 2005 Affordable Housing Plan, based on a 5-year study of Winnetka's unique housing needs. This report, entitled Reinvigorating a Tradition of Varied, Moderately Priced and Affordable Housing: A Report to the Village Council, is under consideration by the Village Council. The Interfaith Housing Center strongly supports its adoption. The Winnetka Home Owners Association is circulating considerable misinformation about the nature of the recommendations. Interfaith prepared a fact sheet for residents, Responses to Objections. Send e-mails of support to the Village Council and President Jessica Tucker through Village Manager Robert Bahan, e-mail: rbahan@winnetka.org. Join Winnetka Is Neighborly to support the Plan's adoption by the Village Council by contacting Ann Airey, Jen McQuet and Nancy Pred at: winnetkaisneighborly@gmail.com

New! LANDLORD TENANT PROJECT WEBSITE LAUNCHED
** Seven local municipalities – Evanston, Highland Park, Lincolnwood, Northbrook, Park Ridge, Skokie, and Wilmette – together with the Interfaith Housing Center launched a new web site, www.landlordtenantproject.org in February 2011, consolidating information on rights, responsibilities and resources for renters and landlords in Chicago’s northern suburbs. The Project is grateful to the Woods Fund of Chicago for its underwriting support. Contact Brendan Saunders at (847) 501-5760, ext. 402, or e-mail: brendan@interfaithhousingcenter.org

NORTH SUBURBAN HOMESHARING!
** Interfaith honors the 25th Anniversary of Homesharing in 2010 with a new web site. Click the logo or hyperlink for North Suburban Homesharing. For more info., contact Jackie Grossmann, (847) 501-5732 ext. 401, or e-mail: jackie@interfaithhousingcenter.org

New! OPEN TO ALL? Immigrants in the Northern Suburbs
** Immigrants now comprise 27% of Chicago's northern suburbs. Although they contribute billions of dollars to the local economy through jobs, spending, and homeownership, they are woefully underrepresented in civic life. On January 28, 2011 before government and community representatives at the Skokie Public Library, the Interfaith Housing Center released Open to All?: Different Cultures, Same Communities, a report it commissioned of the Voorhees Center of the University of Illinois at Chicago to document immigrant life in this region and "best practices" for civic engagement. This project was underwritten by The Chicago Community Trust under an Immigrant Integration Initiative. For more information, contact Alicia De La Cruz at (847) 501-5760, ext. 407, or e-mail: alicia@interfaithhousingcenter.org

Watch United We Learn's Video on School Disparities
** United We Learn, a north suburban, broad-based grassroots campaign which Interfaith helped organize in 2008 in the wake of a Chicago Public School boycott at New Trier High School, released a documentary film, "The Education They Deserve", highlighting stark inequities in the public schools. Segregated housing inevitably leads to segregated public schools, and separate is not equal. The film was underwritten by a grant from the Sally Mead Hands Foundation to Interfaith, as fiscal agent for United We Learn.

VIDEO: "The Face of Fair and Affordable Housing"
The Interfaith Housing Center of the Northern Suburbs is pleased to release this video:

The video was debuted September 18, 2008 in honor of Interfaith's 35 years (and counting) of accomplishment. It profiles those assisted by Interfaith's fair housing, Homesharing, foreclosure prevention, and community organizing and advocacy work, with reflections by a founder, Jean R. Cleland.

Ask Us About Our Fair Housing Exhibit!
** Learn about the historic struggle for housing justice in Chicago's northern suburbs. Interfaith, together with Shorefront Legacy Center, an Evanston-based archive of African-American history in the area, developed this exhibit which has toured multiple communities, banks, and schools. The "History of Equal Housing" series of panels was developed under a grant from HUD's Fair Housing Initiatives Program. Click here for a slide show presentation version of this traveling exhibit.
